The fraction of incoming solar radiation reflected by a surface. Values range from 0 (perfect absorber) to 1 (perfect reflector). Fresh snow has high albedo (~0.9), forests have low albedo (~0.1). Changes in albedo from deforestation or urbanization affect local and global climate.

Coordinate Reference System. A framework that defines how the two-dimensional projected map relates to real locations on Earth. Common systems include WGS 84 (used by GPS), UTM zones, and various national coordinate systems. Correct CRS handling is essential for accurate spatial analysis.

Digital Elevation Model. A 3D representation of terrain surface created from elevation data, excluding buildings and vegetation. Used for slope analysis, watershed delineation, flood modeling, viewshed analysis, and orthorectification of satellite imagery.

Digital Surface Model. A 3D representation of the Earth's surface that includes all objects on it — buildings, trees, and other structures. Unlike a DEM which represents bare earth, a DSM captures the top of everything visible from above.

Digital Terrain Model. A bare-earth elevation model enhanced with supplementary vector features such as breaklines, contours, spot heights, and mass points that define the shape of the terrain more precisely than a grid alone. Often used interchangeably with DEM, though technically a DTM includes additional structural information.

The gathering of information about the Earth's physical, chemical, and biological systems via remote sensing technologies, primarily satellites. Encompasses monitoring of land, oceans, atmosphere, and ice to understand environmental processes and human impacts on the planet.

The combined process of water evaporation from soil and plant surfaces, and transpiration through plant stomata. Estimated from satellite thermal and vegetation data, it is a critical variable for water resource management, irrigation scheduling, and drought monitoring.

Enhanced Vegetation Index. An improved vegetation index that corrects for atmospheric conditions and canopy background noise, providing more accurate readings in areas with dense vegetation where NDVI tends to saturate.
